Energy Ball with Sesame, Dates & Almonds

Energy Balls with Almonds, Dates and Seeds

Energy Ball with Sesame, Dates & Almonds

Fabulous roly poly pick-me-up’s, these Energy Balls with Almonds, Dates and Seeds are a great example of how sweets can be packed with goodness. Each ball provides a boost of healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre. They’re no-bake, and the flavour of ground sesame seeds will remind you of halva, that lovely Arabic treat.

Nutrient Dense No Bake Energy Balls

I invented these Energy Balls in the summer of 2019. We were getting married and our celebration was a fabuloua do-it-yourself event. In the weeks leading up to it I made about 150 of these and stored them in the freezer until the day. They were much appreciated late in the evening!

They’re perfect for summer when you don’t want to bake, and they’re easy to make  – you just have to be careful not to lick your fingers too often as you’re forming them into balls. It’d be easy to eat a couple before you’ve even finished them and – it has to be said – along with the nutrients, they’re calorific. Possibly not appropriate if you’re Keto, but for my Paleo Reset they’re okay.

Energy Ball with Cacao, Sesame, Dates & Almonds

Dates, the natural sweetener, contain around 75 grams of carbohydrate per 100 grams. But they’re also an excellent source of potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, iron and vitamin B6. Cacao, well recognized as a superfood, is an amazing source of magnesium, manganese and phosphorus, as well as being high in healthy saturated fats and antioxidants. The various seeds and almonds provide a range of vitamins, minerals and fats. And while the seeds and nuts also contain Omega 6, you don’t need to worry: if you’ve cut the industrialized seed oils from your diet and if you’re taking a good quality Omega 3 oil, then you can be sure that one ball or two won’t send your Omega 6:3 ratio off balance.

These are delightful and healthy little treats, so go get rolling!

Because these Energy Balls are both easy and one of our favorites, they’re included in my E-Book, Easy & Essential Paleo Recipes for Busy People. Take a look, it’s a compilation of the recipes I cook all the time.

Servings: 18 balls

Equipment

  • Food Processor
  • Electric Spice Grinder

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup cacao (50 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons muscovado sugar
  • 1 cup pitted dates I use Deglet Nour
  • 100 grams almonds ground
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil melted
  • 1/4 cup finely shredded coconut for rolling

Instructions

  • Place the cacao, muscovado sugar, dates and ground almonds into the food processor.
  • Grind the pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds in a spice grinder until they resemble a course flour. Add to the food processor.
  • Process on high speed. When well mixed and with the processor running, pour the coconut oil through the hatch. Keep processing on high until the mixture starts holding together. This might take a couple of minutes. You might want to it a couple of times to scrape down the sides. The mixture will have the right consistency when it forms a wall around the sides of the processor. Stop the processor and remove the blade.
  • Form the balls by pressing the mixture tight in your hands. Roll them in the shredded coconut and refrigerate for a few hours until the oils set. Store in the fridge.
